River, 75’
Jennifer Peedom, Australia, 2021.
Rivers are the arteries of our planet. Different forms of life appear, survive and blossom wherever they pass. Rivers have shaped our landscapes and have been with us since the dawn of civilizations, flowing through our cultures and dreams. This movie-performance collaboration between the director Jennifer Peedom and the Australian Chamber Orchestra is essentially a concert-movie, a powerful joint between image and music. “River” leads us on a journey through space and time through nature's history, as well as ours. Filmed across six continents, utilizing astonishing photography and satellite imagery, the movie follows rivers in 39 countries from perspectives unseen until now. “River” is a unique film experience, an ode to their wildness and magnificence, likewise a warning about their vulnerability.

Fashion Reimagined, 100’
Becky Hutner, UK, 2022.
Fashion designer Amy Powney from the cult brand Mother of Pearl recently became one of the big names of London's fashion scene. Raised in an unconventional setting in rural England by activist parents, Amy has always been concerned about the devastating impact of the fashion industry on the environment. When she receives the respected Vogue Award for the best young designer of the year, Amy chooses to use the award money to completely transform her business. She develops a sustainable 'field-to-garment' fashion collection, sourcing materials directly from the fields and overseeing the process right up to the final piece of clothing. Her journey leads her deep into the core of the supply chain, discovering destructive cycles from deforestation and animal mistreatment to farmer suicides. Her own personal revolution is at the forefront of a much greater social change and addresses the question: what exactly would 'sustainable fashion' look like?

BLOCK: “Autonomous spaces”
Fighting Where We Stand: Struggles For Autonomous Spaces, 30′
SubMedia, USA, 2021.
Autonomous spaces, in the shape of squatted lands and buildings, are a central practice of the alternative scene and anarchist movements. They are places that defend and fight for autonomy, are an example of a non-conventional way of living and represent opposition to the capitalist system. Seen as a counteraction to capitalism, state apparatuses put a lot of effort and energy to repress or even eliminate autonomous spaces. In this short movie, which is one of the episodes of the series “Trouble”, SubMedia introduces us to three fights for autonomous spaces. The Unist’ot’en, in British Columbia, raised in order to block the construction of a pipeline built on the territory of the Wet’suwet’en nation. The ZAD in Notre-Dame-des-Landes in France offers one of the longest and best known examples of defense of an autonomous space, where the struggle succeeded in blocking the construction of an airport. Lastly, we get introduced to the squatting scene of Ljubljana in neighboring Slovenia. Even though these fights take different forms and methods of resistance, they come out of the joint decision of drawing a line in the sand to protect the space whatever might happen.
Best use before:
Tihana Martinjak, Croatia, 2022.
Food waste is one of the major ecological challenges we face in today's modern world. While some see less attractive products as waste, others find creative and tasty ways to use them. This short movie will introduce us to an approach to food that is practiced by collectives such as 'Food, Not Bombs' both in Croatia and around the world. “Best use before:” connects the practice of 'dumpster diving' for food collection with the culture of one of the oldest squats in Zagreb – Reciklaonica.
**After the movies there will be a discussion around the same topic/TBA**

Clown’s planet, 75’
Héctor Carré, Spain, 2021.
Clowns, with the way they look and act, bring relief and are not taken too seriously. But what exactly are activist clowns? In this documentary by Héctor Carré, a group of clowns, led by the famous Patch Adams, bravely visit refugee camps in Palestine and orphanages in Russia, prior to the onset of the wars that we witness today. With their presence in places affected by disease, war, and hardship, they bring cheerfulness and laughter into the lives of children and adults. Their mockery of both themselves and societal structures as a whole carries a healing effect, offering relief in the midst of life’s challenges. Immerse yourself in the world of clowns, their laughter, love, and the healing power of the clownish worldview.

BLOCK: “Wind, mud, and mushrooms”
Windshipped, 40’
Jon Bowermaster, USA, 2022.
Have you ever wondered how far an item that you order online travels? How much fuel, emissions and human effort is used to deliver it to your doorstep within just a few days? What would an alternative and more sustainable form of delivery look like? A group of young adventurers, led by Captain Sam Merrett, deliver materials, goods, and packages using the power of the wind, sailing on a schooner, a type of sailing ship, along the Hudson River to New York. With hard work, they renovated a 1940s schooner, named it Apollonia and made it seaworthy again. Through their efforts, they raise awareness about the negative consequences on the environment and human lives of online orders from companies like Amazon. They remind us that using sailboats for transportation isn’t a new concept; in fact, it was a reliable and efficient method for moving goods in the past. This method of transporting goods has a minimal impact on the environment, yet it requires giving up some of the comforts of the globalized world. 'Delivered by Wind' reminds us that looking back at our pre-carbon past can offer some of the answers we need for our post-carbon future.
Svi smo mi od blata / We are all made out of mud, 24’
GAIA, Kosovo, 2023.
Tired of concrete buildings and the city life? 'We Are All Made of Mud' is a short but inspiring film that introduces us to people and organizations who have built their homes using a centuries-old technique of construction with a natural material – mud. Through the use of natural materials, we delve into the connection between humans and the earth, exploring our relationship with the surrounding environment, as well as the concepts of community living and coexisting harmoniously with nature. Inspirational projects, communities, and families from all over the Balkans, who share their experiences of living in symbiosis with nature. A true inspiration for all those interested in natural building and an unconventional way of life.
Underground Astronaut, 17’
Marleine van der Werf, Italy, Netherlands, 2023.
Below our feet lies a mystery. A complex underground network of mycorrhizal fungi that sustain ecosystems and keep them alive through the exchange of nutrients and carbon with almost every plant on Earth. Surprisingly, even today, we do not know all the details regarding the functioning of these sophisticated and ancient systems, nor exactly how they are affected by climate change. 'Underground Astronaut' follows evolutionary biologist Toby Kiers on her mission to map the world's fungal networks and understand their behavior before it's too late. Dive into the wet and fragrant world of soil and find out, if we have a future in a world without fungi.

Duty of care, 55’
R: Nic Balthazar, Belgium, 2022.
Who is truly responsible for catastrophic climate change? When it comes to taking responsibility for the damage done to the environment and communities, we often find ourselves in an endless circle of arguments, criticisms, and discussions. However, Roger Cox and his team of lawyers initiated a landmark lawsuit that not only marks a significant chapter in the generations-long environmental struggle but also equips it with vital legal tools. The film 'Duty of Care' follows the story of the first lawyer who successfully sued the Dutch government and oil giant 'Shell' in a groundbreaking court case, where it was ruled that activities contributing to climate change can be declared illegal. This precedent, which has unsettled parliaments and corporate boards around the world, has spurred a wave of international climate lawsuits, currently numbering over 2000 worldwide. Can law and justice truly protect us?

Utopias: Landless Worker’s Movement, 52’
Henri Poulain, France, 2023.
For 38 years, the 'Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra' or 'Landless Workers Movement' has been creating spaces of equality, food sovereignty, education, and sharing for those who own nothing. Originally emerging in Brazil, where 3% of the population owns two-thirds of all arable land, the movement bases its actions on the belief that it is legally justifiable to occupy unproductive land that is not being used, so that it can fulfill its social function. This social movement is one of the largest in Latin America, with an informal membership of about 1.5 million people. It physically enables poor workers and farmers to access land and addresses social issues that hinder land ownership, such as unequal income distribution, racism, and sexism. The movement thus creates utopian places where life literally takes root, offering hundreds of thousands of women, men, and children a life that is free, sustainable, and self-chosen. The movement is a major inspiration for smaller and numerous anarchist, labor, and peasant movements around the world. In the movie we get to meet some of the heroines who show us their philosophy and action.

Bigger than us, 96’
Flore Vasseur, France, 2021.
If the world around you sometimes depresses you, if you think we are becoming more apathetic and passive as a civilization, watch 'Bigger than us' for a bit of genuine hope. All over the world, teenagers, young people, and adults are creatively fighting for human rights, climate justice, freedom of expression, social justice, access to education, or food. For dignity, land, future, and justice. And they succeed, changing everything. From the favelas in Rio de Janeiro to remote villages in Malawi, from makeshift boats off the island of Lesbos to Native American ceremonies in the Colorado mountains: Rene, Mary, Memory, Melati, Xiuhtezcat, Mohamad, and Winnie reveal a magnificent world of courage and joy, dedication themselves to causes greater than themselves. In times when everything seems to be falling apart or has already fallen, these young people show us what it means to feel alive in today’s confusing and perplexing world.

CLOSING OF THE FESTIVAL
Where Humans No Longer Rule / Dove l’uomo non è più sovrano, 22’
Paolo Rossi, Nicola Rebora, Italy, 2022.
The short film 'Where Humans No Longer Rule' introduces us to the forests and wildlife of the Quattro Province Apennine region in northwestern Italy. Since humans have abandoned these mountains, nature has reclaimed its stolen spaces: beech trees have taken over pastures, hornbeams and oaks have covered inaccessible areas. In the naturally regrown chestnut forests, martens and wildcats now dwell. To the eye of civilized humans, these places might seem chaotic and lifeless, but in the shadow of large trees, new generations of badgers, foxes, and wolves are found, learning survival skills from their parents, thriving in this new wilderness.
All That Breathes, 91’
Shaunak Sen India, UK, USA, 2022.
In one of the most populous cities in the world, two brothers, Nadeem and Saud, dedicate their lives to the heroic endeavor of saving the black kite, a majestic bird of prey that is crucial for the ecosystem of New Delhi. Amidst social unrest and a toxic environment, the brothers tirelessly care for black kites that fall from the sky in distressing numbers in their improvised basement hospital. Director Shaunak Sen explores the connection between the birds and the brothers who help them return to the sky. He offers viewers a mesmerizing chronicle of the coexistence of two species. In doing so, he subtly addresses acute social issues such as rising Islamophobia and alarming air pollution. This poetic and meditative film about a bird sanctuary has garnered significant acclaim, winning the award for Best Documentary at Cannes and Sundance, and receiving nominations for an Oscar and BAFTA. Its profound message suggests that we may one day realize the importance of not differentiating between all living beings, as we are all part of the same air-breathing community.

Radionica: Tekstil RASPETLJAN!
– Materijali 101 – Koje tkanine odabrati?
– Životni ciklus tekstila, od sirovina do kraja životnog vijeka
– Utjecaji tekstilne industrije na planet i čovjeka
– Kako kritički razmišljati o tvrdnjama tvrtki i organizacija o njihovoj održivosti
– Pojmovi kružnog gospodarstva, sistemskog razmišljanja i rješenja

Saturday, 20.4. @ Secret Location in Zagreb
OFF warm-up party: DJ Mary & Ikonal
The Environmental Film Festival (OFF) invites you to its official warm-up party on Saturday, 20.04 at a secret location in Zagreb from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
With the OFF program, for a whole decade now, we have been trying to deepen our understanding of various environmental and social crises, which, let's be realistic, can be quite depressing...
This year we are focusing on concrete solutions to these crises. They are local, national and global, but also practical, political and philosophical.
If you ask us, the dance floor is a place where we mentally and physically liberate and relax ourselves, connect, socialize, and thus create temporary, and potentially even lasting, communities.
How does the party work?
- the party is free for all visitors
- Because of a specific secret (and exciting ) location, it is necessary to register your arrival via a simple form (we only ask for a nickname and an email address)
- The number of places is limited, so those who register via email will receive confirmations and further instructions on how to get to the party
The party will take place on the 20.4. from 22:00 till 04:00 in Zagreb in a zone which is reachable by tram.
- More information will be provided only to those registered via email.
What awaits you?
Two cult names from the Zagreb club scene are responsible for the good mood and dance rhythms: DJ Mary and Ikonal.
Dj Mary is a pioneer of the electronic, industrial, and alternative scene in Croatia since its very beginnings, in the late '80s and early '90s. He started his DJ career at Club KSET in Zagreb, from 1988 to 1992, and later at other clubs. He is a member of iconic experimental-ambient-industrial-electronic projects from the '90s to the present: TeHÔM, Principia Audiomatica, ex-Implant Code, and the more recent Marythmetic.
With more than 30 years of DJ experience and music production, he is passionately dedicated and always offers a unique selection of music (varying from one set to another). He enjoys great popularity and respect in the Croatian electronic and experimental alternative music scene. His deep love for electronics has built a unique musical taste, which is the primary source of inspiration for his work. His sets vary between EBM, electro, industrial, new beat, and acid. A musical taste built on electronic music of the '80s and '90s has given him a solid foundation for today, ranging from electro to industrial, ambient, experimental, and on the other hand, technoid music that he presents in Croatia and Europe.
Ikonal He is a producer and DJ from Zagreb and a member of the bRAVE collective. He has been involved in electronic music for many years, initially through the project How Convinient, and later through his solo project ikonal, and in the last few years through organizing the bRAVE program, which brought very interesting producers and DJs to Zagreb, such as Helena Hauff, Andreas Gehm, Schwefelgelb, Identified Patient, Umwelt, and others.
So far, in cooperation with various musicians, he has released on the publishing houses Return To Disorder, Gooiland Electro and Medical Records, as well as Lab Personell. The music he performs can hardly be put into one box, as it contains the influences of various genres, and currently swims in EBM, electro, new beat, post punk and techno waters. The main motto of the bRave collective is: Less light, more dark music!
