The illusion of abundance / The illusion of abundance (60’)
R: Erika Gonzalez Ramirez & Matthieu Lietaert / Belgija / 2022
While governments and corporations, trapped in the global race for unlimited growth, exploit resources and raw materials, the protagonists of Bertha, Carolina and Maxima, uncompromisingly oppose such a system. But how do you continue to fight for environmental protection when your life is in danger? When police repression, corporate harassment, assaults or death threats are part of your daily routine? "Illusion of abundance" reminds us of the fact that colonialism is not over and that the new "conquistadors", whose roots go deep into Europe, must take responsibility for all the lies, robbery and murder. This documentary is a dedication to selfless activists from Peru, Honduras and Brazil and a memory of all those who gave their lives in defense of the environment, and a wake-up call to the rest of the world.
The film is followed by a talk: Introduction to ecofeminism (in Croatian only)

Dear future children / Dear future children (90’)
R: Franz Böhm / Germany, UK, Austria / 2021
"Dear Future Children" examines the impact of activism and civil disobedience on the lives of our youngest citizens, who are increasingly choosing to take part in it. In parallel, we follow the protests in the global South that have received a lot of attention in the world media: the mass movement in Hong Kong against the Beijing administration, the long-lasting national protests in Chile against social inequality, and the growth of the local "Fridays for future" branch in Uganda. Through the stories of three girls we explore the challenges and motivations of younger generations for activism, and study the modern organization of protest movements and the increasingly creative methods that develop under pressure. In doing so, we don't get a beautified picture of activism, but understand these movements exactly as they are: They are inspiring as much as they are painful, with all the associated moral declines, small and large successes and finally the necessary sacrifice, that more and more young people are willing to make in order to fight for their future.

Beasts of the southern wild / Beasts of the southern wild (93’)
R: Benh Zeitlin / USA / 2012.
Beasts of the Southern Wilds, a favorite of audiences and critics that has won over 90 awards, brings us a fantastic drama that, in an unusual and imaginative way, shows the bond between a daughter and her father in the fight for survival - in a world that is sinking before their eyes. Little protagonist Hushpuppy is confronted with her father's declining health and the melting glaciers that flood her dilapidated, isolated community on the edge of the metropolis, unleashing prehistoric, ancient creatures. Between reality and dreams, magic and floods - in the community of squatters displaced from the land by urban expansion, only love, solidarity and imagination help to preserve lives and a sense of community. In the midst of all the disasters, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn how to have courage, to love and survive while relying on a small boat and the help of fellow citizens. The film was a commercial success, and critical praise went mostly to the dreamy cinematography and the masterful performance of nine-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis, who became the youngest actress nominated for an Oscar.

Erin Brockovich / Erin Brockovich (131’)
R: Steven Soderbergh / USA / 2000
This classic depicts the true story of a woman who, after working as a legal assistant in a law firm, discovers an incredible crime taking place in the small Californian town of Hinkley. The corporation "Pacific Gas & Electric" has been knowingly covering up an environmental disaster of immense proportions for years: completely contaminated sources of drinking water that cause the local population to continuously fall ill with dangerous diseases. Step by step, with persistence, resourcefulness and empathy, Erin wins the locals over to her side and, having collected about 600 lawsuits, starts a legal battle against the mega corporation. In the spirit of the thematic 10th OFF, "Erin Brockovich" is an outstanding example of the ecofeminist struggle. It shows the strength and determination of an underprivileged single mother, who has to make her way in a patriarchal environment and at the same time fulfill all the imposed gender roles: those of caring mothers, passionate lovers and self-sacrificing partners. All that whilst fighting for the community of those that are even less privileged. To what extent Erin is expected to fulfill all these roles, and to what extent she succeeds or fails, is as interesting to debate as the final result – an incredible legal victory over big capital.

Sacrificed / Sacrifiée (12’)
R: David Sanchez / Canada / 2021
Flavie is a courageous 15-year-old who, in order to defend her social and environmental beliefs, is ready to engage in civil disobedience - regardless of the risk of detention and legal prosecutions. In a conversation with her parents about the consequences of her actions, the two generations discuss their visions of the future, their fears, and their ideas about what is really effective or necessary for things to truly change. Opinions differ, but the space for listening and true understanding is opened up.
Lobau remains / Lobau bleibt (30')
Germany / 2022
In the midst of the climate crisis, the City of Vienna plans to build one of the most climate-damaging and expensive infrastructure projects: the Lobau highway plus city highways as links. In addition to deepening the climate crisis, these projects will also directly endanger the Donau-Auen National Park. After 20 years of struggle by various organizations against this project, in 2021 activists decided to occupy the construction site, thereby creating a protest camp that blocked the works for months. After the forced eviction by the police, the movement does not give up: new actions and the establishment of new camps follow. In this half-hour documentary, we get to know the people on the front line of the fight against this project and their motives. We see their ways of organizing and daily routine in the occupied places, but also what dangers they face from those who are not on their side. As an outstanding example of an activist movement from the neighborhood, "Lobau bleibt" will serve as an inspiration and incentive for us to take changes into our own hands, in our own neighborhoods.
The films will be followed by a discussion: Blockades from the neighborhood: meet Viennese activists! (in English only)
** Razgovor će se odviti na engleskom jeziku! **

The Seeds of Vandana Shiva / The Seeds of Vandana Shiva (82’)
R: Camilla Becket, James Becket / 2022
Dressed in a colorful sari and wearing a crimson bindi in the center of her forehead, Dr. Vandana Shiva embodies an impressive presence: she moves crowds and advises world leaders, while she also works tirelessly on the ground with small farmers in developing countries. Who is Vandana Shiva? What is her mission? How did this woman from an obscured town in India become Monsanto's worst nightmare? Called the "Gandhi of seeds", one of the world's most famous eco-feminists and the child of a forest conservationist from the foothills of the Himalayas, Vandana Shiva felt the brutal power of global industry very early on in her native region. She passionately pursued an education that freed her from the traditional constraints of caste and gender, graduated in nuclear physics to later get a PhD in the field of philosophy of quantum theory. However, these achievements are just the beginning of her activist awakening, which will soon make her an icon of the global movement for environmental and social justice and food sovereignty. The movie "Seeds of Vandana Shiva" focuses on the people, circumstances and key events that shaped Vandana's thinking and defined her ecofeminist orientation.

R: Maurice Trouwborst / Netherlands / 2021
Intended for young film enthusiasts aged 10+, Captain Nova is the full-length debut of director Maurice Trouwborst, who approaches the alarming environmental situation in a youth-appropriate and exciting way. Fifteen-year-old Nas comes across a crashed aircraft in the forest, whose passengers are a 12-year-old girl Nova and her chatty robot ADD. Nova turns out to be a scientist from the future, who has returned to the past to prevent a climate catastrophe. But her mission is made more difficult by the fact that time travel has rejuvenated her, and no one takes the girl seriously. The two new friends see the only solution to the problem in kidnapping a millionaire who plans to drill at the North Pole. However, there are people who want to stop them. Will Nova and Nas manage to save the planet? This SF story outlines globally important topics such as the climate crisis, but still shows the importance of friendship and the necessity of building a responsible relationship with nature and the world that surrounds us.

Block of films "Animalism"
Poison (2′) / Small Things (5′) / Golden (17′) / What is natural in nature? (5′) / Faces of animals (5′)
The system we live in is based on the idea of human domination over nature. It is manifested mainly in the subordination of women to men, of racialized groups to white supremacy and of the global South to the global North. However, the ecofeminist struggle does not stop at gender, class and racialized interrelations of the human species, it includes other "others" as well. With the "Animalism" block, we will explore the relationship we as a species establish with animals; how we experience them, how we systematically exploit them, and what we can learn from them. We will start to question oppressive patterns towards other species that we systematically consider as unquestionable facts. The films will serve as a basis for the discussion that follows.
The films will be followed by a discussion: Veganism as a feminist practice (in Croatian)
Gošće: Suzana Marjanić i Zorana Unković

Princess Mononoke / Mononoke-hime (140’)
R: Hayao Miyazaki / Japan / 1997
In this animated classic by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, we follow Ashitaka, a young warrior who falls under the influence of an ominous curse. The search for a medicine that can save his life brings him to the center of the conflict. Inhabitants of a mining town, whose desire for supremacy has provoked the wrath of nature, find themselves opposed by the forest gods who are led by a wolf warrior named Sen. Through Ashitaka's understanding of both perspectives and unbiased view, we delve deep into the eternal conflict between man's idea of development and prosperity and nature's need for self-preservation. In this fantastic allegory about the delicate balance between humans and natures, Miyazaki, in his manner, refuses a black and white depiction of his protagonists and reviews simple solutions. “Princess Mononoke” depicts life in all its complexity and layers and due to the inexhaustible source of ecofeminist interpretations, closes the jubilee 10. Environmental film festival.

Psychodrama workshop: Pink, blue and other gender stereotypes (in Croatian only)
Host: Jasna Žmak
They are numerous and persistent, they interfere in our lives in many visible and invisible ways, we stumble over them even when we don't want to. They direct our perception and communication every day, they make us think about ourselves and the world in black and white (or rather blue -pink) way – they are called gender stereotypes and they are all around us.
In this workshop, we will therefore dedicate ourselves to uncover them with the help of psychodrama - in order to better understand them. We will explore how we feel in the gender binary world, how we feel in the non-binary one, and what each of the poles of the binary evokes in us. In the end, we will question in which ways we translate these stereotypes into gender roles that we impose on ourselves and which parts of the pink-blue world particularly irritate us.
We will work in a small group, with an emphasis on mutual trust and kindness. The workshop is of an experiential type, which means that it implies a certain degree of openness and readiness to share personal experiences and emotions with the other participants.

Workshop for beginners: DIY Animation
Host: Iva Ružić
With new and easily available programs, the time-consuming and labor-intensive animation process has become maybe not easier, but at least more accessible - we no longer need kilometers of film strip or expensive software. Equipped only with a phone, imagination and patience, we can easily bring imaginary characters to life and place them in various situations, contexts and sets. Once you figure out the logic behind 24 fps and motion slicing, the possibilities are realistic, imaginary, and endless!
In this short introductory workshop, we will master the basics of animation that are applicable to any technique - cartoon, collage, 3D - and are a skeleton that can be used for later more advanced projects. Through a practical exercise, we will play with our own characters and make a short film in stop-motion technique to apply knowledge and practice collective reflection and creation.
Animation, like any artistic practice, has the potential to be a very fulfilling tool for questioning ideas and non-verbal critical thinking. Its creation and consumption can serve as an escape from harsh reality, but also inspire the creation of collaborative communities with an aspiration towards a world based on mutual care and solidarity. Animation in local Zagreb, but also in the broader Eastern European regional context, is accompanied by the features of experimentalism, surrealism and social criticism. The tradition of animated worlds and characters flourished under the auspices of socialism and resulted in a powerful and distinctive artistic expression that we look forward to maintaining through this workshop!
All you need for the workshop is a mobile phone and good will, and it would be great if you pre-installed the application that we will use during the workshop!
